What is the “SWCC Rock 'n Run” all about? On October 11, 2008, there will be something for everyone, starting off at 9am with a 5K run/walk/roll through SWCC ("South West Center City"). The excitement of the race will continue throughout the day as a “party in the park” takes shape, including an afternoon/evening featuring kids activities, food, live music, free health screenings, and more. The festivities will take place in Julian Abele Park, located on 22nd Street, between Montrose and Carpenter, in Philadelphia. All are welcome to enjoy great food and a talented line-up of musical performers from every genre. The music truly covers the fabric of our community with acts ranging from soul to swing, from reggae to funk. The performers themselves have a strong connection in that they, too, either work or live in the neighborhood. The day will finish with an incredible headlining act — a man not from our neighborhood but certainly familiar to us as the genius behind Parliament Funkadelic — Bernie Worrell. Come celebrate health, community, and so much more on this exciting day out. Join us on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Julian Abele Park on 22nd Street between Montrose and Carpenter, just South West of Center City, Philadelphia. Looking forward to meeting you there. Your Neighbors, The SWCC Rock 'n Run Planning Committee “SWCC” a.k.a. South West Center City a.k.a. Graduate Hospital, Marian Anderson Heritage Village, South Rittenhouse... Call it what you like, ours is the dynamic Philadelphia neighborhood bounded by South Street, Washington Avenue, Broad Street, and the Schuylkill River. Whether you have lived in our community for five months, five years, or decades, or whether you have just visited the neighborhood, it is impossible not to notice the changes that have happened and are continuing as we move forward. As we all know, the spirit of a neighborhood in Philadelphia cannot be cultivated without community involvement and purposeful action. The SWCC Rock ‘n Run committee formed with this idea in mind: to generate a true sense of community in this newly re-emerging and exciting neighborhood. Our plan, with the help of others in our area, is to create an event that will allow us to really get to know each other, and to celebrate the fact that we have all chosen to live in this wonderful community together. We would also like to use this event as a tool to draw the rest of Philadelphia in to see that, yes, good things are happening in our neighborhood. OUR MISSION: To energize an already thriving neighborhood. We are confident that not only will there will be a large turn-out for this event, but that this day will become an annual celebration of our community. This is a transitional time, full of promise and development. Please come be a part of this powerful opportunity for connection and growth. |
