Event History

What was the 1st Annual “SWCC Rock 'n Run” all about?

On October 11, 2008, there was an all-day celebration with something for everyone, which started off in the morning with a 5k run/walk/roll through "Southwest Center City" (SWCC) Philadelphia.

The excitement of the race continued throughout the day as a “party in the park” took shape, which included an afternoon/evening featuring kids activities, food, live music, free health screenings, and much more. The festivities took place in Julian Abele Park, located at 22nd and Montrose Streets.

All were welcome to enjoy great food and a talented line-up of musical performers from every genre. The music truly covered the fabric of our community with acts ranging from soul to swing, from reggae to funk. Most of the performers themselves had a strong connection too, as they either worked or lived in the neighborhood at the time.

With the help of many others in our area, we created an event that allowed us to really get to know each other, and celebrate the fact that we all chose to live in the same wonderful community. We also used the event as a tool to draw the rest of Philadelphia in to see that great things happen in our neighborhood.

The 1st Annual SWCC Rock 'n Run in 2008 was a celebration of health, community, great food, excellent music, and so much more. We really enjoyed seeing you all there.

“SWCC” a.k.a. Southwest Center City a.k.a. Graduate Hospital, G-Ho... Call it what you like, ours is the dynamic Philadelphia neighborhood bounded by South Street, Washington Avenue, Broad Street, and the Schuylkill River.

Whether you have lived in our community for five months, five years, or decades, or whether you have just visited the neighborhood, it is impossible not to notice the changes that have happened and are continuing as we move forward.

As we all know, the spirit of a neighborhood in Philadelphia cannot be cultivated without community involvement and purposeful action. The SWCC Rock ‘n Run committee formed with this idea in mind: to generate a true sense of community in our newly re-emerging and exciting neighborhood.

OUR MISSION WAS THEN, AND IS NOW:

To energize an already thriving neighborhood. In times full of promise and redevelopment, we invite you to join us and become a part of this annual event, a powerful opportunity for connection and growth.
